Attention Beaverton students in grades 4-6, Middle School, High School and College! You are encouraged to enter the "If I Were Mayor…" contest to win a $50 VISA gift card and go on to compete in a statewide competition sponsored by the Oregon Mayors Association (OMA). There are three ways to win:

* Poster contest for 4th through 6th grade students;
* essay contest for 7th and 8th grade students;
* and a video contest for high school and college students.

The winner in each category will present their entry at the Tuesday, June 21, 2011, City Council meeting, and go on to compete in the statewide competition for a laptop computer, which will be presented at the Annual Oregon Mayors Association Conference in Madras on August 6, 2011.

"This is a fun and creative way for our young people to engage in civic involvement" said Mayor Denny Doyle. "Our youth are bright, creative and smart! You just never know where the next great idea for Beaverton may come, and I am excited to see what they would do in my shoes."

Mayor Doyle and the Beaverton City Council will judge the local entries based on the criteria outlined by the Oregon Mayors Association. Judges will consider:

* Creativity: does the student demonstrate curiosity and originality?
* Clarity/sincerity of thought: is the submission well thought out and organized?
* Proper use of grammar: does the submission contain proper spelling, grammar and punctuation?
* Subject relevancy: Are the major points relevant to the role of a government leader? Does the student demonstrate an understanding of municipal government and the job of Mayor?

Contest deadline is 4 p.m. on Tuesday, May 31, 2011.
