A Coburg-area man was arrested Tuesday afternoon on several traffic-related charges after crashing while attempting to elude and Oregon State Police (OSP) trooper in the northeast Eugene area.
On March 1, 2011 at 3:30 p.m. OSP Senior Trooper Gale Cochell saw a vehicle traveling southbound on Interstate 5 near milepost 197 at a high rate of speed. Cochell obtained a speed reading of 97 mph on the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. The vehicle sped up faster, passed other traffic on the inside shoulder and cut across all southbound lanes to exit onto Beltline Road.
After entering Beltline Road, the driver lost control and struck the center concrete barrier. The vehicle spun back across the westbound lanes and collided with the right side concrete barrier.
The driver, RONALD EDWIN STEPHENS, age 50, from Coburg, was arrested without further incident. He was examined at the scene by responding EMS personnel before being taken to the Lane County Jail where he was lodged for DUII, Felony Attempt to Elude in a Vehicle, and Reckless Driving.
