Clackamas County Sheriff's Office Case #10-28792

On Saturday, September 18, 2010 at 3:34 a.m. Clackamas County Dispatchers alerted emergency personnel to the report of an occupied vehicle that crashed in the Molalla River.

The location of this crash site was soon confirmed and found situated in the Molalla River, at South Lowe Road and South Molalla Forest Road, in Molalla.

Clackamas County Sheriff's Deputies, Molalla Police and Molalla Fire rescue personnel began scouring the area and soon located a 1999, Jeep, Wrangler, upside-down in an estimated 3' of water in the Molalla River.

This crashed vehicle was found occupied with one deceased, male adult driver. Notifications have been conducted and this person is identified as:

Cary David Hosey, 22, of Mulino. Cary Hosey was discovered to be the driver of this crashed vehicle and a suspended driver. It was learned Cary Hosey had two active arrest warrants on file: One warrant is identified for failure to appear - driving under the influence of intoxicants, with an additional arrest warrant for failure to appear – driving while suspended. (Photo Attached)

Cary Hosey was driving a (Jeep) vehicle at the time of the crash that is not registered to him; although, this crashed vehicle is registered to the injured passenger.

Investigating Clackamas County Sheriff's Deputies report this Jeep appears to have been traveling at a high rate of speed in this area of S. Lowe Road and Molalla Forest Road when it failed to negotiate a sharp turn.

Investigators believe this out-of-control vehicle first struck a large Forest Service gate post anchored in concrete, impacting on the passenger side of this vehicle, prior to departing from the roadway -- then careened over a 15' embankment and came to rest upside down in 3' of water in the river.

A female passenger in this crashed vehicle is identified as Amanda Sowa, 23, of Molalla.

Astoundingly, the severely injured (possibly ejected) Amanda Sowa was able to self-rescue from the river, scale the steep embankment in total darkness and ultimately summon help at a nearby residence by walking an estimated one-half mile from the crash site.

Attending emergency medical personnel on scene report Sowa was having difficulty breathing and received a significant head injury as a result of this incident.

Life Flight was dispatched and airlifted Amanda Sowa to a local Portland hospital from Molalla. A Molalla Reserve Police Officer on duty responded to the hospital attempting to conduct a detailed interview with this patient.

Alcohol and speed are considered contributing factors in this fatal traffic crash investigation.

The Clackamas County Deputy Medical Examiner responded to the scene to investigate this fatality involving the deceased driver identified as Cary David Hosey, 22, of Mulino.

M & M Towing responded to the crash scene and removed the wreckage from the river. This vehicle removed from the river does not appear to have created any environmental concerns.

This fatal traffic crash investigation remains an ongoing investigation to be conducted by the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office.
