Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation following a Tuesday night crash involving a pedestrian and commercial truck westbound along Interstate 84 in the Pendleton area. OSP is interested in hearing from anyone who may have seen the pedestrian along the westbound lanes prior to him being struck.

According to OSP Trooper Amy Ford, on September 21, 2010 at approximately 8:15 p.m. a 2007 Volvo truck pulling a semi-trailer was driven by STEVEN R. MILLER, age 58, from Cedar Hills, Utah was westbound in the right lane on Interstate 84 near milepost 209 when he felt his truck hit something. MILLER stopped and pulled onto the shoulder at which time he noticed the right front headlight was broken out. MILLER started backing up along the shoulder until he noticed a shoe lying on the fog line. After getting out of his truck to look in the darkness for what he may have hit, he spotted a seriously injured adult male lying on the gravel off the paved westbound shoulder.

OSP troopers and personnel from Pendleton Fire Department and Pendleton Police Department responded to the scene. The pedestrian, KYLE RANDALL SHUTE, age 49, was transported by air ambulance to Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU) in Portland with critical injuries. According to OHSU, his condition was upgraded to serious on Wednesday. SHUTE has no known residence.

Trooper Ford said SHUTE was wearing dark clothing, a black baseball cap and was carrying a black bag. Photographs of the cap and bag are provided with this news release to help find any passing motorists who saw SHUTE in the area of the westbound lanes prior to the 8:15 p.m. reported crash.

MILLER was driving for ACT Transportation out of North Salt Lake City, Utah.

OSP troopers from the Pendleton Area Command office are continuing the investigation. Anyone with information to help with this investigation is asked to call Trooper Ford at (541) 278-4090 ext. 4826.

ODOT assisted the scene with traffic control while one westbound lane was closed about five hours.
