FIVE INJURED IN FOUR CAR COLLISION WEST OF SALEM
Posted: June 2nd, 2010 6:23 PM

Five people were taken to Salem Hospital this afternoon following a four car collision on SR 22 in Polk County west of Salem. About 2:40 this afternoon, State Troopers from the Salem Area Command responded to a reported four car traffic collision on SR 22 near MP 23 west of Salem.
The investigation showed a 2002 Nissan pickup driven by Baldev Chada, 55, was eastbound on SR 22 near MP 23 when his vehicle encountered some standing water on the highway. This caused his pickup to swerve to the left and across the westbound lanes of SR 22.
As it crossed the eastbound 'A' lane of SR 22, Chada's pickup was struck by a 1991 Honda Accord. The driver of the Honda has not been identified. A 2006 Toyota mini-van, driven by Eugene Park, 61, of Independence, was westbound behind the Honda and had to brake suddenly as Chada's pick up crossed the westbound lanes.
Park's mini-van was being followed by a 1989 Dodge Aries being driven by Sharon Van Cleave, 58, of Dallas. Van Cleave was unable to stop in time and struck the rear of Park's mini-van. All four operators were taken to Salem Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. In addition to the four drivers, a passenger in Park's mini-van, Chung Kim, 50, of Independence, was also taken to Salem hospital.
Troopers reported that it was raining heavily at the time of the collision and there was standing water on the highway. SR 22 was reduced to one lane in each direction for about 1 1/2 hours while the collision was investigated and cleared from the highway.
