One person died and another received minor injuries Friday afternoon in a crash involving a van and a commercial truck on Highway 18 about two miles east of Highway 101. Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers from the Newport Area Command office are continuing the investigation. The victim's name is being released following completion of next of kin notification.
According to OSP Trooper Adam Kowing, on May 14, 2010 at approximately 4:41 p.m. a Safeway commercial truck loaded driven by JACOB ROWLAND, age 38, from West Linn, was westbound on Highway near milepost 2 when an eastbound 1999 Ford van driven by JORGE L. TEPOS-ROCHA, age 42, from Lafayette, crossed the centerline. ROWLAND was unable to avoid the van and both vehicles collided head-on.
After the collision the truck crashed into a power pole along the westbound shoulder before coming to a stop partially off the highway. ROWLAND was able to get out of his truck and was later transported with minor injuries by Pac-West ambulance to Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital.
The van came to a stop in the eastbound lane. TEPOS-ROCHA was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Safety restraints use information is not available.
Highway 18 was closed several hours with a detour in place during the investigation, scene cleanup and power pole repair by Pacific Power personnel.
North Lincoln Fire and Rescue, Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, and ODOT also assisted at the scene.
