GRESHAM GOES GOOGLE - IMAGINE WHAT GRESHAM COULD DO WITH A GIGABITE

GRESHAM, Ore. – Today the City announced its intention to vie for Google Fiber for Communities. Google plans to build ultra-high speed broadband networks in communities across America that has populations between 50,000 and 500,000.
"Gresham is an ideal match for Google," said Communications Manager Laura Bridges-Shepard. "Our community size, our quality education system that includes higher education, our diverse business community, engaged residents and our climate fit what Google is looking for. What we need now is for Gresham residents to tell Google they also want the network here and what they would do with it."
Google will consider the level and nature of community support as part of its decision-making process. Residents can show their support for Gresham at greshamoregon.gov/GoogleFiber by nominating Gresham directly to Google and by taking the poll at the site.
This project would have a broad-reaching, positive impact to the City, its residents, and local businesses, including:
• Robust connections for telecommuters, entrepreneurs, and all residents, including support for high-quality video streaming
• Strengthened educational programs and resources, from early learning through adult education
• Enhanced capabilities for existing companies, especially those with a global presence
• Broad appeal to prospective companies considering relocation to Gresham
• Increased ability to apply sustainability values to the workplace through teleconferencing/telecommuting opportunities
Within the year, Google plans to select one or more communities to deploy their fiber network. Google has stated that it will consult with prospective cities and meet with local officials before making any final decisions. It is not divulging information about the deployment plan or expected cost of the services at this time but describes them as competitive.
