An Oregon State Police (OSP) trooper, with the assistance of a drug detection canine, arrested two people on the last day of 2009 after finding approximately 50 pounds of marijuana during a traffic stop on Interstate 84 in the La Grande area.

According to OSP Sergeant Larry Graves, on December 31, 2009 an OSP trooper stopped a 1995 Chevrolet Blazer displaying Massachusetts license plates eastbound on Interstate 84 near milepost 260 for a traffic violation. During the stop the two occupants were identified as driver GERALD SOLOMONSON, age 45, from Connecticut, and passenger PHLIP J. McCARTHY III, age 28, from Russell, Massachusetts.

Subsequent investigation during the traffic stop led to the discovery of approximately 50 pounds of marijuana located in three large bags in the vehicle. A Union County deputy and OSP drug detection canine assisted with the seizure and arrest of the two men.

SOLOMONSON and McCARTHY were lodged at the Union County Jail for Unlawful Possession, Delivery and Manufacture of a Controlled Substance – Marijuana.

OSP Drug Enforcement Section detectives are continuing the investigation. Estimated value of the seized marijuana is $125,000.

(Note: City of residence of Solomonson is unknown)
