SHERIFF'S OFFICE RESPONDS TO FATAL CAR CRASH ON S MOLALLA FOREST RD; TWO DEAD, THREE INJURED

On August 2, 2014 at approximately 8:05 PM, Clackamas County Sheriff's Office Deputies responded to a report of a single-vehicle traffic crash on S Molalla Forest Rd at about mile post 7.5 south of Molalla, Oregon. Initial reports indicated a passenger vehicle traveled off the roadway, down a steep embankment, and into the Molalla River.
Upon arrival, responding Deputies discovered the crashed vehicle in the Molalla River and down about a 100 foot embankment. There were five occupants in the vehicle. Two of the occupants, the driver and a passenger, were killed as a result of the crash and the three other passengers were injured.
The cause of the deaths and extent of the passengers' injuries is unknown at this time. However, two of the passengers were transported to Portland area hospitals by the Life Flight Network and the third passenger was transported to an area hospital by ambulance.
As part of the investigation, Deputies learned at least one passerby rendered aid to the injured passengers at the crash scene until Sheriff's Office personnel arrived. When Deputies arrived, two of them climbed down the embankment and rendered aid themselves until the injured passengers were safely pulled up the embankment by rescue personnel.
The water and steep embankment created a hazardous rescue operation for both the crash victims and first responders. Personnel from the Sheriff's Office's Marine Unit and Dive/Rescue Team coordinated with the Clackamas County Water Rescue Consortium to rescue the injured passengers using specialized equipment.
The Clackamas County Water Rescue Consortium is comprised of personnel from the Clackamas County Sherriff's Office, Clackamas Fire District, Gladstone Fire Department, Lake Oswego Fire Department, Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue, Estacada Rural Fire District, Canby Fire District, Sandy Fire District, and American Medical Response.
Although rescue personnel have left the scene, the crash is still being investigated by the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office and the Clackamas County Medical Examiner's Office. The names of the deceased are being withheld pending family notifications.
