Gresham, Ore. -Police detectives investigating the case in which a man rammed a police car, were able to identify the suspect early yesterday and he was taken into custody without incident. The arrest was made with the assistance of the U.S Marshal's task force in the area of 160th and E Burnside just before 8 p.m. on March 9.
Richard Pierre Overton, 40, whose last address was in NE Portland, faces charges of Attempted Assault I, a U.S. Marshal's hold on a parole detainer, Unlawful Use of a Weapon and Felony Eluding in the incident which led to one officer discharging his weapon. That officer has been placed on administrative leave, as is routine in an officer involved shooting, while detectives continue to investigate.
Officers encountered Overton yesterday in the area of NE 167th Pl. and Couch St. Police believe Overton intentionally drove his vehicle into the police car, hitting the car with the officer, who had just exited his vehicle, still near the vehicle, narrowly missing the officer and pushing the vehicle into a fire hydrant. One of the officers fired upon the car. Neither officer was injured. Overton was later involved in a pursuit with officers from Multnomah County and Portland Police. He fled from his vehicle in the area of 126th and Stark and was not immediately found despite a search.
Overton is on federal probation for a previous conviction for Felon in Possession of a Firearm. Overton has an extensive criminal record that includes assault on police officers.
There is no further information available on this case, as the investigation is continuing.
