UPDATE: FATAL TRAFFIC CRASH - HIGHWAY 30 SOUTH OF SCAPPOOSE
Posted: March 4th, 2011 12:21 PM

Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation into Friday morning's two vehicle fatal traffic crash on Highway 30 about four miles south of Scappoose that resulted in the death of a St. Helens man. OSP troopers from St. Helens and Portland offices are being assisted in this investigation by the Multnomah County interagency crash investigation team. ODOT has nearly completed cleaning the highway following vehicle removal and all lanes should be open shortly.

According to Senior Trooper Jeromy Hasenkamp, on March 4, 2011 at approximately 6:41 a.m. a 2005 Dodge Neon four-door driven by DENNIS EUGENE GUMP, age 53, from St. Helens, was eastbound on Highway 30 near milepost 16 when, for an unknown reason, it travelled across the center paved median into the right westbound lane where it collided nearly head-on with a dump truck. The Dodge came to rest near the center of the highway.

GUMP was using safety restraints and was pronounced deceased at the scene. He was reported enroute to work.

Within five minutes of the reported crash, two separate reports were received through Columbia County 9-1-1 regarding erratic driving involving a vehicle matching the description of the victim's car eastbound from the Scappoose area. Contributing factors to try and explain the victim's driving have not been determined. There is no evidence alcohol was a contributing factor.

The dump truck driver, GEORGE M. MORGAN, age 45, from St. Helens, was transported by ambulance to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. He was using safety restraints and was driving for Teevin Bros. Trucking. The dump truck and trailer contained fill dirt.
