PCC ROCK CREEK CAMPUS TO HOST OREGON HOUSE AND SENATE REDISTRICTING COMMITTEE MEETING
Posted: March 28th, 2011 4:47 PM

The Portland Community College - Rock Creek Campus (17705 NW Springville Road) will host a public meeting of the Oregon House and Senate Redistricting Committee on Friday, April 8 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Beaverton Mayor Denny Doyle is urging all interested citizens to attend.

Using data from the 2010 Census, the Oregon Legislature is responsible for redistricting the state's 60 House districts and 30 Senate districts, as well as the five U.S. Congressional districts by July 1. The House and Senate Redistricting Committees have been tasked by the Legislature to draft a recommended redistricting plan. The Committees are using the April 8 meeting to gather public input on the redistricting progress.

Mayor Denny Doyle is hoping that Beaverton and Washington County citizens will use this opportunity to represent and help define their communities.

"This once-a-decade redistricting process is such an important part of our democracy," said Mayor Doyle. "By ensuring that election districts are comprised of roughly equal populations, we ensure that each Oregonian's voice in our representative democracy is equal as well. It is in all of our interests to ensure that the redistricting process is fair and representative of our communities and a robust public dialogue will be critical in achieving that end. I highly encourage Beaverton residents and our friends from neighboring communities to come share their ideas and opinions with the House and Senate Redistricting Committees on April 8."

The City of Beaverton and Washington County have seen significant population increases over the last ten years. The City of Beaverton grew from a population of 76,129 in the year 2000 to 89,803 in 2010 representing an 18% increase. Washington County's population increased by 19%, growing from 445,342 residents in 2000 to 529,710 in 2010. The population growth in Washington County is amongst the highest of any Oregon county. The 1st congressional district and the eight state legislative districts with Beaverton households could all be altered by the redistricting process.
