UPDATE #2: OSP SEEKING WITNESS(ES) TO FATAL TRAFFIC CRASH - JASPER-LOWELL ROAD NEAR JASPER IN LANE COUNTY

Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation into Saturday afternoon's single vehicle fatal traffic crash near Jasper that resulted in the death of an elderly man and critical injuries his wife. Trooper Todd Cutsforth is conducting the investigation and seeking anyone with information to contact him at (541) 726-2536 ext. 422.

On January 15, 2011 at approximately 5:40 p.m. a 1999 Toyota Camry driven by NINA M. SMITH, age 80, from Oakridge, was eastbound on Jasper-Lowell Road when, for an unknown reason, it traveled off the right side of the road at the Parkway Road (Highway 222) intersection and struck the end of a bridge guardrail. NINA SMITH and her 82-year old husband / passenger, RAYMOND K. SMITH, were transported by ground ambulance to Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend.

RAYMOND SMITH was pronounced deceased after arriving at the hospital. NINA SMITH was critically injured.

Safety restraint use by both occupants is pending investigation confirmation.

The highway was partially closed about one hour. Firefighters from Lowell Rural Fire Protection District assisted at the scene.
