Posted: January 26th, 2011 1:58 PM

Oregon State Police troopers are continuing the investigation into Tuesday afternoon's traffic crash that resulted in the death of an adult male motorcycle operator northbound on Interstate 5 south of Salem. A fully loaded Creswell School District school bus was involved in the crash but no students were injured. The names are being released in this update and next of kin were notified.

According to Lieutenant Eric Altman, on January 25, 2011 at approximately 3:25 p.m. a motorcycle operated by RONALD V. McNUTT, age 66, from Turner, entered the northbound lanes of Interstate 5 near milepost 250 when McNUTT appeared to lose control in the area of the middle and right lanes. The school bus operator, SARAH HANSON, age 29, from Creswell, saw the motorcyclist losing control and tried steering to the left lane but was unable to avoid the motorcycle as it fell toward the school bus.

The school bus struck the motorcycle operator and he was pronounced deceased at the scene. He was wearing a protective helmet.

The school bus was loaded with about 50 high school age students. Neither the driver or student passengers were injured. A replacement driver was transported by the school district to the scene. After the initial investigation involving the bus including obtaining statements, it was allowed to depart from the scene.

Oregon State Police troopers from the Salem Area Command office are continuing the investigation.

Salem Fire Department and ODOT assisted at the scene.

No photographs for release.
