RED CROSS OPENS SHELTER IN WELCHES
Posted: January 18th, 2011 3:23 PM
The Oregon Trail Chapter of the American Red Cross will open a shelter today at 4 p.m. for families affected by the Sandy River flooding in Welches and the landslide in the Lolo Pass area. The shelter is located at Camp Arrah-Wanna, 24075 E Arrah Wanna, in Welches.
The shelter will have snacks and water available, as well as the capacity to serve meals and provide overnight stays for displaced residents. The Red Cross anticipates serving three meals per day for the next week; approximately 75 people per meal. Currently, the Red Cross is assisting nine families, however the weather may necessitate more evacuations in the area. If needed, the shelter can accomodate more than 200 people.
At the shelter, the Red Cross will also work with families on a case-by-case basis to meet their immediate disaster-caused needs. Assistance may include food and clothing, comfort kits (toothpaste, shampoo and essentials), clean-up supplies, health services and emotional support.
"Camp Arrah-Wanna has showers, cooking facilites and much more," said Kelly Scott, Emergency Services Director for the Oregon Trail Chapter. "We know that the area isn't yet safe, so we're planning ahead and securing the best space possible, in case there are further evacuations."
All client casework currently occuring at the Mt. Hood Lions Club, 65000 East Highway 26, will transition to the shelter at 4 p.m. Ongoing transportation between the two sites is currently being coordinated.

In Oregon, the American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disaster every 20 hours; supplies more than 90 percent of Oregon's blood; teaches thousands of Oregonians lifesaving skills; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a charitable organization – not a government agency – and depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission.
