A commercial truck driver from California died Thursday afternoon when the truck he was driving traveled off the northbound lanes of Interstate 5 near Ashland and came to rest in Bear Creek. Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers from the Central Point Area Command office are continuing the investigation and seeking any witnesses to this crash.

According to OSP Sergeant Tanya Henderson, on January 27, 2011 at approximately 4:19 p.m. a 2006 Peterbilt truck pulling a trailer loaded with produce driven by ROBERT ORMEROD, age 69, from Shingletown, California was traveling northbound on Interstate 5 near milepost 15. For an unknown reason the truck left the northbound lanes into the center median, went over an embankment and landed in Bear Creek.

ORMEROD was pronounced deceased at the scene. He was driving for Youngman Trucking from Anderson, California.

Some of the truck and trailer's produce load and diesel leaked into Bear Creek.

Jackson County Sheriff's Department, Ashland Fire and Rescue, Ashland Police Department, ODOT, Star 24 hour towing and First Strike (Hazmat Clean up out of Roseburg) all assisted at the scene.

Several bystanders at the scene believe there may have been witnesses to the crash.

Anyone who witnessed this crash is asked to call OSP Southern Command Center dispatch at (541) 664-4600.
