OSP CONTINUING INVESTIGATION OF SERIOUS INJURY TRAFFIC CRASH INVOLVING FORMER EUGENE MAYOR RUTH BASCOM NORTH OF BURNS

Oregon State Police troopers from the Burns work site are continuing the investigation into a Wednesday afternoon single vehicle traffic crash that resulted in serious injuries to a former Eugene city mayor. Her husband was driving the car on Highway 395 about fifteen miles north of Burns when the crash occurred and received minor injuries.
On August 11, 2010 at approximately 4:30 p.m. a 2009 Toyota Prius driven by JOHN BASCOM, age 85, from Eugene, was southbound on Highway 395 near milepost 56 when he reportedly fell asleep. The car traveled across the northbound lane, off the highway and struck several road side boulders and trees.
Passenger RUTH BASCOM, age 84, was seriously injured. She was transported by ambulance to Harney District Hospital in Burns and then taken by air ambulance to St. Charles Medical Center for further treatment.
JOHN BASCOM was transported by ambulance to Harney District Hospital with minor injuries.
Both individuals were using safety restraints.
According to online information, RUTH BASCOM was the first woman mayor of Eugene, serving their community as mayor from 1993 – 1996.
