Interstate 84 east of Baker City is open following a couple traffic crashes, one of which involved a commercial vehicle transporting household furnishings and other property. The eastbound lanes were closed about 7 hours to allow for removal of debris and vehicles.
According to Oregon State Police Trooper Jeff Spencer, on June 15, 2010 at approximately 7:00 a.m. a commercial truck pulling two trailers, one of which was loaded with household furnishings and property, was driven by KENNETH NORLUND, age 49, from Salt Lake City, Utah eastbound in a highway construction zone on Interstate 84 near milepost 324. The truck and trailers reportedly drifted to the right onto soft gravel and hit a guardrail, damaging about 140 feet of railing and splitting open the side of the rear trailer spilling its contents. The eastbound lanes were blocked by the spilled contents, damaged guardrail and vehicles. The investigation is continuing into this first crash.
As traffic backed up due to the first crash scene, a 1997 Buick LeSabre with two occupants was stopped about two miles back in the eastbound lanes when it was struck in the rear by a commercial truck driven by CARL N. MYLER, age 30, from West Valley, Utah. The impact pushed the Buick into the back of a stopped semi-trailer. A 69-year old West Haven, Utah woman who was a passenger in the Buick received serious, non-life threatening injuries. She was transported by ambulance to St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Baker City. Her husband was driving their car and wasn't injured. Driver distraction is a contributing factor and MYLER was cited for Reckless Driving.
Oregon State Police troopers from the Baker City office are completing the investigations. ODOT, Knife River Construction and Baker Ambulance assisted at the crash scenes. The eastbound lanes were opened about 2:00 p.m.
