Two drivers received non-life threatening injuries Tuesday afternoon when a commercial truck collided into the side of a turning pickup on Highway 99W about five miles south of Amity. After the impact both vehicles slid over 300 feet off the highway and down an embankment before stopping just prior to going into a creek.
According to Oregon State Police (OSP) Senior Trooper Douglas Brown, on June 15, 2010 at approximately 2:20 p.m. a 1998 GMC Sierra pickup driven by JOSE RAMIREZ-AMADOR, age 38, from McMinnville, was southbound on Highway 99W near milepost 50 beginning to turn left off the highway when a commercial truck driven by JEREMY ALLAN CALLAHAN, age 31, from Springfield, attempted to pass on the left. The truck struck the side of the pickup, forcing both vehicles about 300 feet off the northbound shoulder, striking a bridge railing as they traveled down an embankment and stopped just before going into Plum Creek.
Both drivers were transported to Willamette Valley Medical Center in McMinnville. Safety restraint use information unavailable.
CALLAHAN was cited for Following Too Close.
OSP troopers from the Salem Area Command office are continuing the investigation. Polk County Sheriff's Office, Amity Fire Department and ODOT assisted at the scene.
NWFF Environmental had several units on scene and half a dozen workers putting absorbent pads into the creek to catch the petroleum that leaked from the pickup truck.
During most of the crash investigation, one lane was open.
