News Release from: City of Beaverton
CITY COUNCIL TO CHANGE MEETING DAY TO TUESDAYS
Posted: June 9th, 2010 4:31 PM

- Meetings will no longer conflict with those of the Beaverton School District and Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation District -

On Monday night, the Beaverton City Council held a public hearing and discussed a proposed change of its regular meeting night from Monday to Tuesday nights. Previously discussed during two Council retreats, a consensus was reached during the January 2010 retreat to put forth an ordinance to make the change in days. The ordinance will be effective as of Friday, October 1, 2010.

"This is a long overdue change that will make city council discussions more accessible to the community," stated Mayor Denny Doyle. "In addition, city staff will have more time to fully respond to questions submitted by Council members on Mondays."

Benefits to the change in meeting days include additional time for Councilors to review materials prior to the City Council meeting and more time to ask staff questions about agenda items. In addition, due to the current conflict with Monday holidays, the change would allow for more days for the Council to hold meetings and a more regular meeting schedule. Finally, the Beaverton City Council meeting will no longer conflict with the Beaverton School District and Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation District board meetings which are also currently held on Monday nights. Beaverton City Council meetings would continue to be broadcast live on TVCTV channels 21 and 30 as well as on the City's web site at www.BeavertonOregon.gov.

Concurrently, the City Council is developing a schedule of business meetings on the first and third weeks of the month, with topic specific study sessions scheduled for the alternate weeks as needed.

"I believe this change to Tuesday nights will help the City Council be more efficient and effective," said Council President Marc San Soucie. "By reducing conflicts with holidays and other meetings, we can increase the number of dates available for Council meetings. This will increase the predictability of our schedule, a benefit to the Council, staff, and the public."

A second reading and adoption of the ordinance will take place at the City Council meeting of June 21, 2010. Additional changes to the Council procedures ordinance include clarification that the Council has flexibility in conducting its business, an update to technology references in the ordinance, the removal of conflicting retention schedules for tapes of executive session, and an alignment with the state law regarding the production of meeting minutes. Notice of the June 7 public hearing was given on May 28, 2010, to the Council and media. It was also posted on the City's official web site, at City Hall and made available at the Beaverton City Library by June 3, 2010.
