THE RECOVERY OF RARE COINS AND INADVERTENT DISCOVERY OF A DECENT MAN

If it appears we in law enforcement have a continual current of discouraging bad news to report, often times we do, but don't lose hope and forget: every once in a great while we do have the privilege of releasing an invigorating story that does illustrate extraordinary acts of human kindness and genuine decency. This brings us to our next story which pleasantly unfolded earlier this week in Wilsonville.

On Monday, June 7, 2010 Alexander Piascik, 76, of Wilsonville, was attending to some affairs of his estate while lamenting over the recent loss of his beloved wife. On this occasion, Alexander Piascik found himself collecting items of value from his safe deposit box at a local Wilsonville bank, and gathered all of these cherished items in a 'fanny pack' that he used to carry his assortment of valuables from the bank.

Sometime, between 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. while transporting this fanny pack of collected valuables from the vault of the bank, Alexander chose to provide his dog an opportunity to walk in Memorial Park. Upon returning from this stroll in the park with his dog, Alexander realized his pack containing all of his valuables was missing from his vehicle. Needless to say, Alexander Piascick was emotionally devastated even further with this added jolt and sudden loss of his cherished collection of old coins.

Alexander Piascik immediately contacted the Wilsonville Police Department and reported his regrettable loss; describing to police his missing rare coins, silver dollars from the 1800's and at least 200, two-dollar bills.

THE RECOVERY OF RARE COINS AND INADVERTENT DISCOVERY OF A DECENT MAN

On Tuesday, the very next morning, John H. Oswald, 83, of Wilsonville arrived at the Wilsonville Police Station and surrendered a 'fanny pack' and contents that he personally discovered earlier in the roadway on Monday afternoon, between 5 and 6:00 p.m.

John Oswald explained he had been driving along SW Parkway, in Wilsonville when he spotted the pack on the pavement in the middle of the road. Oswald said he stopped, recovered the bag from the pavement and soon discovered the unusual contents; however, there were no accompanying articles of identification contained inside the bag with the revealed valuables.

Obviously, John Oswald, being the responsible citizen he is – representing our greatest and most profound generation – did what is monumentally honorable and brought the discovered pack of valuables intact to the Wilsonville Police Department. Admirably, the sole desire and motivation by Oswald was to help facilitate the safe return of these valuable items to the rightful owner.

Shortly thereafter: Alexander Piascik was at home on the telephone actually engaged in the process of reporting his considerable loss to his insurance company when Wilsonville Police, Deputy Michael McLeland, arrived at the Piascik residence joyfully announcing the remarkable recovery and return of the missing Piascik pack of valuables.

Alexander Piascik is extremely grateful to John Oswald for finding and caring for the packet of valuables he momentarily lost on the roadway in Wilsonville. Alexander Piascik will be meeting with John Oswald for the first time this morning at the Wilsonville Police Department to personally express his heartfelt appreciation.
