At 6:15 AM Canby Fire was dispatched to a fire at 435 N Cedar Street, the Cedar Villa Apts. When fire crews arrived they fire was blowing out the front widows and door, as well as out the back patio door, with flames extending 40 feet above the roof line. The fire was in unit 435, and quickly spreading to the neighboring unit as well as the attic space above.
Crews quickly pulled large diameter hose lines and attacked the fire. Once the main body of fire was extinguished they quickly opened the attic space and fought the fire that was spreading in the attic. The fire was brought under control in approximately 35 minutes.
Firefighters treated one adult victim for a minor burn injury, and another victim for smoke inhalation. Both victims were transported by ambulance and there conditions were listed as minor.
Fire investigators have determined that the fire was caused by a cooking fire. The fire spread from an electric skillet to the kitchen cabinetry, and then quickly through the rest of the apartment unit. Family members of the affected apt unit told us that some family members were awake when the fire started, and that their smoke alarm alerted the members still sleeping. Seven members lived in the initial fire unit. One member from this unit was treated for a minor burn injury.
The adjacent unit, which was also badly damaged by fire, housed eight members. They told fire investigators that they were asleep when somebody started to bang on their front door. Short after that their smoke alarms also sounded. All eight were able to narrowly escape down the smoke and fire filled staircase. One member from that unit was treated for smoke inhalation.
American Red Cross was called to the scene to service the needs of 26 displaced individuals. Also, early in the incident Canby Burgerville provided hot food and beverages for those adversely affected. Eccels School also served as a staging are for the families living in the Canby Villa Apartments.
Fires in apartments always provide a high level of concern for fire officials, because a fire in a single unit can affect the lives of many. Canby Fire would like to remind everyone that working Smoke Alarms are required to be installed by the landlord, but must be maintained by the resident. Also, Canby Fire recommends smoke alarms be installed in every sleeping room, just outside the sleeping area, and at least one on every level of the home.
Firefighters from Canby, Clackamas, TVF&R, Molalla, and Aurora assisted in extinguishing this blaze.
