PRELIMINARY INFORMATION: FATAL TRAFFIC CRASH - INTERSTATE 5 IN ALBANY

Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation into Sunday evening's single vehicle rollover crash along Interstate 5 in the Albany area that resulted in the death of an 8-year old boy and serious injuries to his 3-year old brother. The names and other information related to this fatal traffic crash may by released by noon on Monday.

Preliminary information indicates on January 13, 2013 at approximately 6:50 p.m., a 2000 Dodge Durango with six occupants was northbound on Interstate 5 near milepost 235. For an unconfirmed reason, it traveled into the center median where it rolled numerous times before coming to rest on its side inthe southbound lanes.

An 8-year old boy was ejected and pronounced deceased at the scene. His 3-year old brother was seriously injured and transported by ambulance first to Albany General Hospital and then transferred to Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Corvallis.The 53-year old male driver, a 37-year old female passenger and two other juvenile-age passengers were injured but not transported.

OSP troopers from the Albany Area Command office are continuing the investigation into the cause of the crash. A tire malfunction may have been a factor but is still pending confirmation as to a cause of the crash.

OSP was assisted at the scene by Linn County Sheriff's Office, Albany Police Department, Lebanon Police Department, Albany Fire & Medical, and ODOT. The southbound lanes were blocked about 3 hours and one lane was utilized for northbound traffic.
