Two people were arrested Saturday afternoon following a traffic stop by Hines Police Department and Harney County Sheriff's Office on Highway 20 on the west end of Burns after a traffic complaint led to the discovery of a small, dismantled methamphetamine lab inside a commercial truck. At both agencies' request, the Oregon State Police (OSP) Drug Enforcement Section sent members from the statewide Clandestine Lab Response Team to assist with the investigation and coordinate removal of lab items.
According to OSP Sergeant Dan Conner, on January 5, 2012 at approximately 12 noon, Hines Police Department and Harney County Sheriff's Office stopped a 2002 Freightliner truck pulling a flatbed trailer westbound on Highway 20 near milepost 129 following a reckless driving and hit-and-run complaint. The truck was occupied by two people identified as driver STEVEN ALLEN SMITH, age 46, and passenger BRIDGET RENEE GOLDING, age 39, both from Jacksonville, Arkansas.
Subsequent to the traffic stop, police officers arrested SMITH for DUII-Drugs and found a boxed small, dismantled methamphetamine lab in the truck. Local police contacted OSP Drug Enforcement Section and a team of detectives were dispatched from Salem, Portland, and Bend to assist with the investigation.
The truck and trailer were towed to a secured lot. A search warrant was obtained and executed on the vehicle Sunday morning during which OSP detectives seized the evidence and a small amount of methamphetamine. The dismantled lab was turned over to a Haz-Mat team contacted by DEQ to respond for disposal.
Both suspects were lodged in the Harney County Jail on the following charges:
SMITH
* DUII - DRUGS
* Unlawful Possession and Manufacture of a Controlled Substance - Methamphetamine
GOLDING
* Unlawful Possession and Manufacture of a Controlled Substance - Methamphetamine
