CITY OF BEAVERTON HOSTS TOY, GIFT CARD AND COAT DRIVE
Posted: November 19th, 2012 9:50 AM
- Donations accepted from Monday, Nov. 19 through Friday, Dec. 14 -
The city of Beaverton is helping local families and children in-need this holiday season by seeking donations of food, toys, gift cards and winter coats from Nov. 19 through Dec. 14,.
"The holidays are a tough time for many families struggling to make ends meet," said Mayor Denny Doyle. "For those facing financial challenges, a new toy or a warm jacket can make a world of difference--bringing hope, comfort and joy at a time when they need it most."
Donations of new, unwrapped toys will be accepted at Beaverton City Hall, both Beaverton City Library locations, various city-owned buildings and partnering businesses (see listed below). Non-perishable food donations will also be accepted at Beaverton City Hall and the Beaverton City Library.
Donations of new and used coats will be collected at Beaverton City Hall, and donations of gift cards will be accepted in the city's Neighborhood Program Office, located on the first floor of Beaverton City Hall.
Toys will also be accepted during the city of Beaverton's Tree Lighting & Holiday Open House on Friday, Dec. 7 from 5-8 PM at the Beaverton City Library.
The Tualatin Valley Gleaners will distribute the toys to Beaverton's low-income youth and foster children throughout Washington County. Gift cards will be distributed through the Beaverton School District's Family Resource Center, and new and used winter coats will be given to the Beaverton School District Clothes Closet.

ABOUT TUALATIN VALLEY GLEANERS
Tualatin Valley Gleaners is a supplemental food program in partnership with numerous organizations, including the Oregon Food Bank, Hands On Greater Portland, Beaverton Farmers Market, St. Vincent DePaul, and the city of Beaverton. It is unique in its approach, with a focus on individual responsibility and dignity. More than 500 families work in collaboration with each other and the community gleaning (picking) food from fields and orchards, as well as collecting food/non-food items donated by stores, markets and the Oregon Food Bank. The food is distributed once a week through the participating efforts of its members. The value of providing for one's family is reinforced as all members are expected to participate at some point in the harvest (gleaning), distribution process, education, community outreach, or other operational activities. Each family unit keeps half of the food they harvest and shares the remainder with other members. To learn more about Tualatin Valley Glean
