SHERWOOD POLICE DEPARTMENT HOSTS UNIQUE DOMESTIC VIOLENCE TRAINING FOR POLICE OFFICERS

Domestic Violence continues to be an epidemic in Oregon, and around the country. For Sherwood Police Department, calls to Domestic Violence incidents are the second highest call for service. Chief Jeff Groth has made responding to and investigating Domestic Violence calls a high priority in his department. Chief Groth states : "We are dedicated to keeping victims safe. We may not be able to completely eradicate Domestic Violence, but we must work towards significantly reducing repeated violence with advanced training which helps improve the quality of our investigations and, hopefully, leads to perpetrators being held accountable."
To this end, Sherwood Police Department recently collaborated with Oregon Department of Justice Domestic Violence Resource Prosecutor, Erin Greenawald, and Salem Police Department, to host two days of scenario-based Domestic Violence training, the first of its kind in the area. Officers from Sherwood Police Department, Salem Police Department, Beaverton Police Department, King City Police Department, and Prineville Police Department attended the training. The various scenarios in the training replicated Domestic Violence calls to which officers respond every day. The characters in each scenario were played by volunteer "actors." These actors were comprised of a multi-jurisdictional combination of prosecutors, advocates, and community correction officers, all of whom have vast experience with Domestic Violence cases. The training was overwhelmingly successful. Many officers and participants noted that it was the best Domestic Violence training they had received. Oregon Department of Justice DV Resource Prosecutor, Erin Greenawald added, "Sherwood Police Department should be commended. Chief Groth and his officers have demonstrated an amazing commitment to combating Domestic Violence in this community. With the success of this training, I hope other agencies follow their lead in providing this type of exercise to its personnel."
Sherwood Police Department endeavors to always provide the highest quality of training to its officers. This can only be achieved through continued efforts of working closely with other law enforcement agencies. Collaboration helps bring in the necessary expertise needed and reduce the expense of individual agency training.
