BEAVERTON CITY LIBRARY HOSTS A DISCUSSION ON GLOBAL CLIMATE POLICIES AND THE ROLE OF FORESTS

The Beaverton City Library (12375 SW 5th Street) will host The Reforestation Solution: Global Climate Policies and the Role of Forests on April 21 from 6-8 p.m. Randall Bluffstone, director of the Institute for Economics and the Environment at Portland State University, will discuss global efforts underway in forests to combat climate change and improve the earth's ecological systems.
According to Bluffstone, the growth in future CO2 emissions are expected mostly in poor countries outside formal obligations and agreements, so real reductions in a global carbon footprint are at risk. Most of the efforts to combat this increase depend upon a United Nations program called Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD).
"This is a great opportunity to learn about global climate policy," said Abigail Elder, library director. "We're excited to have Mr. Bluffstone share his wealth of knowledge about this important issue."
Bluffstone's research and teaching interests focus on environmental and resource economics, including pollution policies, deforestation in low-income countries and the economics of suburban sprawl. He is the author of two books, including Agricultural Productivity in East Africa: Investment, Sustainability and Poverty Reduction.
