Milwaukie Fourth Annual Prescription Drug Drop-Off Nets 156 Pounds of Medications and Controlled Substances. Coinciding Document Shred Event totalled 4200 Pounds of Paper.
Milwaukie Police Cadets, Providence Milwaukie Hospital, and volunteers with the Milwaukie Public Safety Foundation hosted the 2013 Prescription Drug Drop-Off Day Saturday, April 28. This coincided with the National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day scheduled by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
Citizens turned in a total of 156 pounds of unwanted or expired prescription and non-prescription medications. 6.75 pounds were controlled substances. In addition, nearly 46 pounds of bottles and pill containers were also collected.
The 'drive-thru' service allowed citizens to arrive at the Public Safety Building and properly dispose of unneeded or expired prescription medications. Milwaukie Police Cadets assisted by taking the controlled substances at the drive-thru and handing them to staff and volunteers from Providence Milwaukie Hospital. The various medications were counted, separated, and later properly destroyed, using environmentally safe methods.
People are discouraged from dumping medications down the toilet, water drains, or in the garbage because many drug compounds release toxins known to be hazardous to the environment. Proper disposal of prescription medications also prevents teenagers and others from unlawfully obtaining and using these drugs.
The City also sponsored a document shred event at the same time. Citizens dropped of a total of 4200 pounds of personal documents for shredding.
