MULTI-VEHICLE INCIDENT CLOSES HIGHWAY 58 IN WILLAMETTE PASS FOR FOUR HOURS (PHOTOS)

Ten motor vehicles, including three commercial vehicles, were involved in a minor crash Thursday evening along Highway 58 in the Willamette Pass east of Oakridge. The incident closed the highway for about four hours. Oregon State Police (OSP) and ODOT urge travelers to be prepared for potential hazardous winter driving conditions on many mountain passes and other areas as people head out for the weekend and upcoming holidays. According to Lieutenant Rob Edwards, on December 20, 2012 at approximately 7:55 p.m., an eastbound commercial truck pulling a semi-trailer was negotiating a curve on Highway 58 near milepost 56 when it stalled in the lane of travel. Two additional commercial trucks pulling trailers attempted to drive past but lost traction on the snow covered highway and slid into the stalled truck and semi-trailer. Seven other passenger vehicles also slid out of control and became stuck in the deep snow.
The vehicles were freed from the snow while the highway was closed for nearly four hours. OSP and ODOT was also assisted by Oakridge Fire and Rescue.
