- An eclectic mix of accomplished local work on display -
The Beaverton Arts Commission (BAC) is hosting new exhibits throughout May at City Hall (4755 SW Griffith Drive) featuring works by talented local artists. The works of art will grace the first, second, and third floor corridors.
"The wide array of artistic styles showcased at City Hall this month is a true delight," said Mayor Denny Doyle. "I am continuously in awe of the exceptional creative talents within our community."
During the month of May, Phyllis Meyer, Lana Nelson, Warren Kennaugh, and Dick and Jane Millager will have their works displayed throughout City Hall in the following locations:
First Floor Lobby/Third Floor Corridor: Phyllis Meyer
Meyer is an accomplished local artist and longtime friend of the BAC. Upon her retirement in 1994, she began her art career, and has held a near continuous presence at the BAC's Annual Visual Arts Showcase ever since. Meyer's work ranges from abstract to impressionistic, with an emphasis on intense color, abstract shapes, and the use of calligraphic line. Her City Hall show primarily depicts her newest artistic inspiration - crows. Meyer notes her enjoyment in painting crows, appreciating their nerve, curiosity and intelligence.
Second Floor Lobby: Lana Nelson
Nelson's opportunity to paint came after a demanding career in public transportation. Her art experience has been enriched by talented instructors and guidance from other artists in the aspects of drawing, color theory and composition. Her City Hall paintings of Oregon and Washington landscapes were all started outdoors and finished in her studio.
Third Floor Corridor: Warren Kennaugh
Kennaugh is an accomplished and well-traveled artist, having spent a great deal of his life creating art in England, Massachusetts, California, and now Oregon. His successful career in sign painting and display art has influenced him to present immediate and simple messages with his works. Kennaugh views art as a vessel to depict the deep need of expressing one's moods, personality, and passion to others. Art is not just the result, but the process. His art display for City Hall is a compilation of abstract and geometric works composed using a stunningly vivid color palette.
Third Floor Pedestals: Dick and Jane Millager
Dick and Jane Millager are a husband and wife duo specializing in fine wood working. Their designs are influenced by their travels throughout America's southwest. The Millager's achieve their beautiful results through various techniques, including ancient chip carving and intricate scroll saw work. For the May display, the Millager's will be showcasing their new beaver-inspired collection. For more information about the artistic couple and their work, visit www.dickjanemillager.com.
Beaverton City Hall is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. All art works are for sale. If you are interested in seeing more art collections, the Beaverton Arts Commission also has revolving art exhibits at Providence St. Vincent Hospital (9205 Southwest Barnes Road), Cedar Hills Recreation Center (11640 SW Park Way), and the Artisan Salon (4430 SW Lombard Avenue).
