Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation into Tuesday morning's critical injury traffic crash on Highway 6 at the Highway 47 junction in the Banks area. One person was partially ejected through her vehicle's windshield and carefully extricated by Banks Fire Department personnel before being transported to a Portland hospital.
According to OSP Sergeant Malcolm Lewis, on May 25, 2010 at approximately 10:00 a.m. a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by LAURIE A. KALSTAD, age 33, from Beaverton, was westbound on Highway 6 near milepost 49 when, for an unknown reason, it crossed the centerline into the path of an eastbound 1991 Peterbilt tow truck towing a large vehicle. The Peterbilt's driver, RICHARD A. BURDEN, age 30, from Tillamook, attempted to avoid the oncoming Jeep by steering to the right toward a field but the vehicles sideswiped.
KALSTAD was partially ejected through the windshield and was critically injured. She had been using safety restraints. Banks Fire Department personnel extricated her and she was transported by LifeFlight to Oregon Health Sciences University.
BURDEN was not injured. He was using safety restraints.
OSP troopers from the North Plains office, assisted by an OSP crash reconstructionist, are continuing the investigation.
Washington County Sheriff's Office and ODOT assisted at the scene. Traffic was detoured about four hours.
